I used to wake up every morning and dive straight into my day. My kids would meet me at my bedroom door along with their laundry list of needs -- a permission slip to be signed, an empty lunch box to fill, and questions about after-school plans.

Each of their questions and requests piled on for me to fix, answer, and solve all while brushing my teeth and stirring their oatmeal (sometimes accidentally stirring the oatmeal with my toothbrush because I was so scattered).

And once the kids were out the door, my team and clients would take their place -- seeking out my attention and time with the same rigor and demands. 

Everything felt like an emergency, and my ability to tackle so many things at once led me to respond without a second thought. “I could help and fix things, so why wouldn’t I?”

But I soon realized that every time I was saying “yes” to someone’s request, I was saying “no” to more important work. Sure, all those to-do items needed tending to in some capacity, but without a clear plan for my day, I would get to the end wondering if I was any closer to my goals or if I just wasted my day putting out fires only to start all over again the next morning.

The way I showed up at this time can be easily understood through The Urgent Important Matrix by Dr Stephen Covey of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” 

This matrix shows four quadrants:

I was very much stuck in the not urgent/not important category which has been proven to cause stress and high rates of burnout. The crazy thing about it was that I was making non-urgent things...urgent.

Here’s the hard truth…


Allowing others to control your time and energy doesn’t work. Just because you are a high performer and can handle a lot more than the average person, doesn’t mean that it’s the best use of your time to do so. 

Changing the narrative of your day is a must! Wake up early and make a plan before anyone else steps in to dictate your day.

I researched and used proven methods that worked well for high performers to filter out what wasn’t important and make time for what mattered most.

I dialed in my habits and used a tool to hold me accountable. 

Soon, I was able to be much more present with my kids and show up for them in a proactive manner.

I also led my clients and team better because I had a plan rather than allowing them to change the course of my day at the drop of a hat.

As an avid user of any and all planners I could get my hands on, I've used planners of all kinds!
